Timothy R. O’Neill served in the United States Army for 26 years, and on the faculty at West Point for fifteen. At the US Military Academy, he was director of the engineering psychology program. Since his retirement from the Army, he has served as a business executive, trained foreign special operations units, and worked as a defense consultant. He is the author of The Individuated Hobbit: Jung, Tolkien, and the Archetypes of Middle-earth (Houghton Mifflin, 1979), the novels Shades of Gray (Viking Penguin, 1987; Publish Green, 2013) and Mandala (2014).

He is a graduate of The Citadel, the University of North Carolina, the University of Virginia, and the Armed Forces Staff College, and is a recognized expert on the application of human visual processes to the design of camouflage.

He lives with his wife in Alexandria, Virginia.
